AAA or Triple-A games are video games produced or developed by a major publisher with a huge development and marketing budget. The term isn't an official classification, but in general, a "triple-A game" is equivalent to the term "blockbuster movie."

The term originated in the '90s and has since morphed into gamer slang. Want to read more about gamer slang/language?Check out this helpful post I wrote!

What are AAA games? A Guide to Triple A Games (1)

Thousands of games have been released over the last few decades and many of them have been loved by many gamers. There are games that hit a big milestone in terms of sales and ratings, and there are some that were considered failures because not many players liked them.

Are other games referred to as AA, A, B games?

Some people refer to games as AAA, AA, A or B or even C and beyond. But there really is no standard for this and it really comes down to personal preference a lot.

Most players typically label big-budget games as "Triple A" but do not further classify non-AAA games.

What are the most successful Triple A games?

One of the main reasons there's still no policy regarding categorizing a game as AAA or non-AAA is that games are constantly innovating, and what's an AAA this year may not be an AAA in the next few years be more.

Examples include Counter-Strike and HalfLives who were considered AAAs during their reigns in the late 90's and early 2000's. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (the latest CS) wasn't on the list of triple-A games even when it was first released a few years ago.

What are AAA games? A Guide to Triple A Games (2)

As of 2018, here are some of the most successful Triple A games based on their total earnings. (Those)

  • Fifa 18, Electronic Arts – $790 million
  • Grand Theft Auto V, Take-Two Interactive – 628 Millionen US-Dollar
  • Red Dead Redemption 2, Take-Two Interactive – 516 Millionen US-Dollar
  • Monster Hunter: World, Capcom – $467 million
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft – $440 million

There are more games that actually earned more than these games on the list, but they aren't considered triple-A games, mainly because the developer/publisher didn't have a big budget. Some of the non-AAA games that really made it in terms of earnings are:

  • Fourteen days, Epic Games – $2.4 billion
  • PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Bluehole – $1.028 billion
  • Dungeon Fighter online, Nexon – $1.5 billion
  • League of Legends, Riot Games, Tencent – 1,4 Milliarden US-Dollar
  • Pokémon GO, Niantic – 1,3 Milliarden US-Dollar
  • crossfire, Neowiz Games – $1.3 billion

It's so interesting to see that Mario Kart from 2017 is one of the best selling video games in 2021, beating out Resident Evil: Village which was released this year. However, theMost copies sold sometimes do not reflect the quality of the AAA game.

Do triple-A games guarantee quality?

No, not really, although developers will always try to guarantee the quality of their triple-A titles. They invested a lot of money, effort and timeTo Designing it so that they always do whatever it takes to make it a success. However, this is not always the case when the game is shipped to consumers.

There are some triple-A games that didn't do well simply because users didn't like them. So it's on a case-by-case basis, and players would typically base the failure on the game's overall gameplay and storyline.

Sometimes the developers focus too much on the graphics quality that they end up slacking off on the game mechanics and storyline, causing the game to fail in overall quality.

Are there AAA games that have flopped?

In relation to the above information, there are actually a number of AAA stocks that have completely flopped. These games were considered a complete failure and many critics and gamers ridiculed the developers who made these games.

Sometimes the games get overrated and while they have the potential to be amazing, they leave players with utter disappointment for one reason or another.

There are many reasons why games can flop completely - an incomplete game that has to be paid forDLC'sto make it "complete", pay-to-win microtransactions, bugs and glitches, lack of coherent story and more.

What is the typical budget for triple-A games?

It is estimated that a triple A game will costabout $60 million or moreto develop, and as you can see, definitely only a big distributor/developer can afford that. Distributors and developers like Capcom, Ubisoft, Rockstar Games, Insomniac, Epic Games and many more are known for making modern triple-A games. (Those)

Developing a video game is no joke. You have to rentdifferent expert teamsdevelop important parts of the game. Usually, one team is designated for the content and storyline, the programming team, which writes the code for all the necessary game features like physics, rendering, and more.

A team also takes care of the graphics quality (including actors and actresses) and a team that optimizes them depending on which platform the game will be released on.

The audio features are just as important as the QA team that tests the game for bugs and reports them to the developers for fixing.

Here are some example budgets:

  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2- $200 million (production, marketing and launch)
  • Battlefield 3- $2.75 million for Facebook ads only
  • God of War III– $44 million for development

How many people typically work on a Triple A game?

Every distributor hasherown group of developers working on a specific game. That doesn't mean that if Capcom created Monster Hunter World, they only worked on Monster Hunter World during that period.

They have different teams working on different games and each game hasherown sub-teams working on other tasks to develop the game. It is estimated that for every team working on a game,There will be around 50-200 employees and 20% of them are programmers.

What are AAA games? A Guide to Triple A Games (4)

It is also common for a Winning Game to fund other games from the same distributor, whether or not the Winning Game is a triple AAA game. It is also common for a major distributor to produce both AAA and non-AAA games at the same time.

As in the case of Capcom; They had released Monster Hunter World, Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 2: Remake - all triple A games.

There were rumors that Resident Evil 2: Remake was made possible because Monster Hunter World was able to fund it properly. However, Devil May Cry 5 seems to have fallen short and has only sold 2 million copies so far. Monster Hunter World had sold 12 million copies and grossed about $467 million for Capcom.

Note that despite these massive gains, Capcom also made huge gains with its non-AAA titles like Megaman 11 in the background. Capcom announced in its 2018 report that its company haStotal about 2,000 employees, and other distributors have about the same total number of employees.

How long does it take to finish a AAA game?

If you know the average number of employees working for a major game publisher, you might mistakenly believe that a triple-A game can be developed in a matter of days.Regrettablythis is really not the case.

Although an average of 50 to 200 people work on a single AAA title,It would still take months or even years to develop such a project, depending on the genre and scope of the game.

What are AAA games? A Guide to Triple A Games (5)

It is estimated that non-Triple-A titles with a good reputation in the gaming industry take about 3-6 months to develop, butAn average number of triple-A titles released in recent years have lasted around 2 to 3 years.

That seems like a long time, and I'm sure you've seen plenty of whiners online complaining about why it's taking so long to release their favorite Triple-A title. Well, most of the staff working on the development of a game, whether they are testers or programmers, usually work more than 8 hours a day, especially in Japan.

Some game testers working in Japan spent 16 hours a day testing the same game over and over again looking for bugs. Despite their hard work, some bugs still escape the game's release.

This information should give you an idea of how difficult it is to develop a game. While 2-3 years seem generous,Some game genres can take even more than 6 years to develop. God of War (2018), for example, took about 4 years to complete.

If you want to read more about how long it takes to finish a video game I wrote a postHere.

The Cons of Developing Triple A Games

While it's very inspiring to see the earnings from the successful triple-A titles we play, there are actually many downsides that can come up when developing a title. This job is more of a gamble that involves wagering not only a huge sum of money but also hard work and precious time.

(Video) Recommended Performance Settings for the Top 10 AAA games on Steam Deck

As I mentioned above, developing a AAA title takes time, dedication, hard work, and a lot of moneyYou can't even be sure if players worldwide will like it or not.

Aside from beating the odds by gambling, triple-A games are also very difficult to optimize, especially for PC. This is why some PC versions of games always come late as optimizing a game for it is a very difficult task.

Most AAA titles have VERY high hardware requirements, and let's face it, PC components don't exactly come cheap.

What are AAA games? A Guide to Triple A Games (6)

And let me tell you one thing - gamers are demanding. If you can't create something that will entertain them, then your game is going to be in serious trouble - and it's going to happen all the time, whether it's from a major publisher or not.

And that's where the problem would arise: Even if your triple-A title were only a dollar a copy... if the users can't even launch the game because their computer can't handle the load, no one will be able to play your game.

With that, you need to ensure that your game runs on an average rig while maintaining the quality for it to be rated as an AAA title.

Another disadvantage that you have to fight against isthe risk of piracy and your fight against cybercriminals. Yes, all developers around the world are fighting these people to reduce or eliminate the risk of their games being hacked or pirated (crack version). And unfortunately, most always lose.

How do indie games differ from AAA games?

On the other hand, indie games (unrelated to the word) are developed by individual companies, usually asmall team of developers and programmers. If a triple-A title is being developed by a large game company that is working on different games at the same time, an indie game is being developed by a smaller company that is only working on that particular game.

What are AAA games? A Guide to Triple A Games (7)

With this information, indie games can be classified as games that are developed on a smaller budget than triple-A titles. It is also common for an indie game to be developed by a creator as there are now various tools and software to create games on your own. Usually these are mainstream tools provided by companies that publish games like iTunes and Google Play.

Can indie video games compete with AAA titles?

However, with tighter budgets, indie games can still compete with triple-A games. In fact, there are more indie players in the world than triple-A players. How is it possible?

I mentioned above that playing a AAA game would cost a lot when it comes to the right hardware - and that's where indie games usually come in. An indie game is usually developed using different game software than the production companies of AAA games.

The reach of indie game developers is wider as indie games are not that demanding on the hardware and the smartphone you are holding right now will definitely be able to run most of the indie games on the market today.

The most successful indie game is without a doubt Minecraft. The small company behind Minecraft had sold 54 million copies before the game was sold to Microsoft for a whopping $2.5 billion.

Diploma

Developing a game is somewhat similar to playing a game - you must have the passion to achieve your goals. Whatever you work onIt's not always the budget and the number of people you work with that determine your success– but it is always your determination and perseverance.

As a gamer who's played triple-A games, indie games, and everything in between, I found this outit doesn't depend on the classification. Indie games can be just as good (or even better) than AAA games, and thatBig marketing and production budgets don't necessarily mean a quality game.

A game with great graphics quality can stand out, but it's not the only trait by which a successful game is measured.

Always remember that there is always an alternative for everything, and that alternative might just be the best, even when you compare it to more expensive options.
